Alen currently lives in the UK, but he set his Marko della Torre trilogy in 1991 in the disintegrating former Yugoslavia. His protagonist, Marko is an internal affairs officer with UDBA, Yugoslavia’s version of the KGB. But Marko’s role is to investigate possible wrongdoing on the part of the secret police. The case that becomes central in the trilogy is the assassination of the Swedish Prime Minister Olaf Palme. The second book in the trilogy ‘Killing Pilgrim’ offers a theory into the killing and the third pulls it all together. Kirkus Review writes…one of the year’s most enjoyable thrillers, this sequel boasts great characters, lived-in dialogue and stripped down storytelling that for all its drama couldn’t be lighter on its feet.
