Police in Toronto launched a massive anti-terrorist operation in 2006 against 18 suspects who had planned to detonate bombs, attack Parliament buildings and behead politicians to force Canadian troops from Afghanistan.
“I couldn’t understand how young men raised in Canada would harm their fellow citizens based on their reading of Muslim tradition,” said Ausma Zehanat Khan, a British-born Muslim who has lived in Toronto.
Her new mystery novel, “The Language of Secrets” featuring Muslim detective Esa Khattak, is loosely based on that terrorist plot.
Published this month, with the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif., still fresh in many people’s minds, it reads like it’s been ripped from the headlines.
